Thought Experiment: What would a creative director/manager tell you to do? Focused on my performances
Next steps
I just posted a YouTube video on this topic. It is embedded below.
I mentioned that my gig last Saturday (a week ago, from yesterday) was canceled due to weather.
I was bummed, because I love performing. But I had also been viewing the gig as the “last of its kind” due to a thought experiment I’ve been leaning into recently.
I’m not the originator if this thought experiment… I’ve heard many variations of it over the years. In this variation it is focused on what I am doing with my music.
If I hired a manager or creative consultant to help me move my music career forward, what would they have me do?
Perhaps more specifically, what would they have me do NEXT?
This is a thought experiment that could be applied to any career or any project that you want to move forward.
For instance:
Want to be healthier/more fit?
What would a trainer and dietician have you do next?Want to be a better presenter?
What would a presentation coach have you do next?
Etc., etc.
A couple caveats or considerations:
What are your broader objectives?
What limitations exist? (available time, money)
Types of Gigs
There are two basic types of gigs (greatly simplified):
Bar/Pub/Restaurant Gigs
These can be two to four hours long. You job is to keep the crowd entertained and, basically, sell drinks.
You are NOT the focus. You are expected to play favorites - hits from today and yesterday. You can slip a few of your originals in.
Some days, people are engaged, other times, you wonder whether the mic is on.
You get paid by the venue and you make some tips.
Listening Room/Songwriter Gigs
You are typically playing for less than an hour. You might do a 45 minute set, take a short break, and then do a 30 minute set.
It’s you and your music.
You have to draw people to the show - promote, beg, borrow, steal - whatever.
To start, you may not be paid.
You need to generate both the interest and your value.
The Gigs I Want (and plan) to Play
Nothing wrong with either type of gig…
I explain in the video that playing the cover gig will help you improve as a performer. You learn a lot of songs, varied styles, and improve your playing. You get paid. You get fed.
But…
My goal is to play and reach people with my music.
With that goal front and center, and the fact that I’m comfortable with my performance - musicality & stage presence - I am only interested in playing gigs that are shows featuring, Matthew Moran and his music. That’s me!
This will be coloring how I approach venues and promotion.
I explain a bit more in the video. It’s not that long - 8 minutes. Check it out if you are interested and let me know your thoughts.
Deb and I are discussing other areas where this thought experiment comes into play. More on this in the future.
Thank you for joining me on this journey.
With Love and Gratitude,
Matthew Moran
